Stanislav Petrov (1939-2017) was a Soviet lieutenant colonel and former officer of the Soviet Air Defense Forces. He is best known for his role in preventing a nuclear war between the United States and the Soviet Union on September 26th, 1983. Petrov was the officer on duty in charge of monitoring the Soviet Union's early warning system for nuclear missile attacks.
On that day, the system detected what appeared to be a incoming missile from the United States. Petrov, however, believed the alert to be a false alarm since the system showed that only one missile was detected instead of several, which would have been expected in a full-scale nuclear attack. Despite the protocol requiring immediate retaliation, Petrov chose to report the system malfunction to his superiors instead of launching a counter-strike.
It was later confirmed that the alarm was in fact a malfunction in the satellite surveillance system. Petrov's decision was praised for averting a potential nuclear catastrophe and he was credited with saving the world from a nuclear war. However, Petrov's superiors punished him for not following protocol and he was reprimanded for his actions.
Petrov's story was not widely known until the 1990s when it was declassified and revealed to the public. He received numerous awards for his actions, including the Dresden Peace Prize in 2013. Petrov passed away in 2017 at the age of 77.
